Purpose and Organization

TRB -- The Transportation Research Board (TRB) is a unit of the National Research Council, the principal operating agency of the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering. The purpose of TRB is to bring together scientific and technical information to bear on transportation problems by encouraging and conducting research, and disseminating information.

The major functions of TRB are accomplished through the voluntary efforts of individuals through TRB committees, supported by TRB staff. These functions are to:

  • Identify research needs and resources
  • Stimulate research efforts
  • Provide for the exchange of concepts and techniques
  • Encourage reporting, evaluating, synthesis and interpretation of research findings
  • Provide for publication of research findings
  • Promote coordination of national research efforts
  • Encourage the dissemination and application of knowledge.

TRB Committee on Transportation and Economic Development (ADD10) -- The committee is concerned with the macroeconomic effects of transportation infrastructure investments, the effects of transportation cost changes on local and regional competitiveness, and methodological issues in defining and measuring effects of transportation investments on economic growth and performance. The committee is also concerned with the economic development effects of varying intermodal and modal investment strategies

The objective of this committee, like that of all TRB committees, is to:

  • Keep members of the transportation community apprised of research -- through (a) sponsorship of papers and sessions at conferences and workshops, and (b) development and publication of statements of research problems, critical issues and research needs.
  • Synthesize research -- through (a) sponsorship of special workshops, (b) development of bibliographies and (c) publication of compendiums of papers.
  • Make recommendations -- of (a) papers for TRB awards, (b) co-sponsorship of special activities with other TRB committees and other relevant agencies.
